This journal is handmade from vintage buffalo hide and is coloured with a natural ‚mahogany brown‘ dye derived from tree bark. The front cover has a hand-tooled sacred ‚Pentagram‘ symbol. The journal contains 100 pages/200 usable sides of plain, unlined 150gsm cartridge art paper. The cover measures 6×5 inches (15x14cm). It will fit comfortably in a handbag or large pocket. It will make an excellent Grimoire or Book of Shadows. This is a tough and durable book that will give many years of service. The folios of paper are stitched into the leather cover with a traditional ‚Italian‘ stitch – a style of binding that guarantees a long life. The paper is suitable for drawing, sketching or writing – it is suitable for many media, including water colour and fountain pen. This Ash Tree design was inspired by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, which is presently campaigning to save the ash tree. (See: http://www.cpre.org.uk/what-we-do/countryside/hedgerows/update/item/3106-the-battle-to-save-englands-ash-trees). I shall donate income from sales of this book to support the CPRE campaign. The Ash is the second most common hedgerow tree in Britain and its survival is crucial to the character of the countryside – but, tragically, ash trees are threatened by the spread of ‚ash dieback‘ disease. The Ash also had a profound symbolic meaning in Celtic culture, where it was known as the World Tree or Tree of Life. In my cover design I have included a Celtic knot, and the Celtic name for the Ash – ‚Nuinn‘ – in Runic script. In this version of the journal I have dyed the cover with a wash of ‚Mahogany Brown‘. It is also available in Apple Green. I can make the journal in other colours to order.
